Steve Prescott MBE

Steve Prescott has always been a fighter.

Never the biggest of blokes on a rugby field, he fought his way through to win a place with St Helens Academy and then earned a fulltime contract with St Helens.

He served his hometown club well and later his professionalism was tested to the hilt amidst the money pit that was Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at the turn of the 21st Century.

Having played for Hull in 1998, Prescott earned Ireland international honours to go along with 2 England caps and representation for Great Britain at Under 21 level.

Steve returned to Hull in 2001 and played there until injury forced him into premature retirement when he was at the top of his game.

Since his playing days came to an end, Steve has been faced with an even bigger battle against a rare form of Cancer. Despite regular heavy treatments, he has become a truly inspirational character, often putting aside his own discomfort to fundraise for the Christie Hospital, who this season are appearing on the front of Swinton's shirts, the RFL Benevolent fund and his own foundation.

There is lot's more information about Steve's magnificent work over on the website: http://www.steveprescottfoundation.co.uk/Home.aspx.

Reading about Steve and his humble acceptance of an MBE, it makes you so proud to think there are people like him around. The award is a superb one for Steve and as he says his family, friends and I think rugby league as a whole.

Rugby League is a brighter sport when people like Steve have been, and continue to be involved.
