Jimmy Ledgard

Just his bare statistics suggest club legend.

334 games over ten years between 1948 and 1958, 36 tries and 1043 goals. His 2,194 haul was a club record that stood until 1990 when John Woods surpassed him with 3 goals in a 16-6 home defeat against Halifax.

Jimmy Ledgard had already made a name for himself at Dewsbury and indeed the fullback was to return to them once his decade long dominance of the Leigh number one shirt had started to slip.

As mentioned in a previous blog, Leigh shelled out £2650 for Ledgard, more than they had spent in acquiring and developing Hilton Park, or Kirkhall Lane as it was in those days. I read something the other day that suggested the amount was equivalent to about £211,000 in modern money!

I feel that the following piece from esteemed League writer Dave Hadfield does Ledgard credit: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/jimmy-ledgard-441556.html
