Eye-catching Signings

The imminent arrival of Robbie Paul at Leigh got me thinking about previous eye-catching signings down at the club.

Just after the Second World War, when the club was restarted, it broke the bank for the likes of Jim Ledgard from Dewsbury and later Joe Egan from Wigan, both set rugby league records for transfer fees with Ledgard reportedly costing the pricely sum of £2650 and Egan £5000.

The transfer of Alex Murphy was also a big one for the club and the fact he went on to serve it four times as a coach, shows how close Leigh became to his heart.

When Kiwi international Shane Varley came across to Hilton Park in the early 80s, that too was seen as a big move and latter years have seen Tommy Martyn return home after making his name with Oldham and St Helens.

Over the next few days I'll hopefully have a bit of an article about each of these figures and of course Robbie, once the veteran New Zealand international is announced of course!
