Hull returned to winning ways with a functional performance over an organised, spirited but ultimately limited Harlequins at the KC Stadium this evening.
Hull handed a debut to former Salford player Jordan Turner while the internl suspension of Jordan Tansey saw Richard Whiting move to full back. Quins, shorn of several regular first team players themselves handed a debut to Martyn Smith while Ben Bolger continued from the bench.
The hosts opened scoring after 9 minutes when Whiting sent Willie Manu storming through the defence and Craig Fitzgibbon supported. Danny Tickle struck the first of three goals and it was 6-0. Craig Hall then had a try disallowed and Hull continued their virtual one way traffic when Tickle stole the ball in a tackle from Chad Randall and Manu put another thunderous run in.
In the 21st minute Hull scored their second try when Kirk Yeaman hit a hole off Shaun Berrigan's pass to claim his 3rd try in 4 games. Tickle converted for 12-0 before Harlequins fought back gamely through the likes of Karl Temata, Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook and Jason Golden. Will Sharp also took the battle to the hosts and with Danny Orr kicking and the visitors chasing, they restricted Hull without ever truly pressing.
The nearest Harlequins came was just before half-time when Temata was held up and Orr kicked for Jamie O'Callaghan only to see Tom Briscoe palm the ball out of play for a drop out.
Hull got the scoreboard ticking again in the 45th minute when Hall split the defence from a scrum and had too much pace for the chasing Chris Melling. Tickle hit the posts with the conversion and Hull really applied pressure and trapped on-loan fullback Ben Jones-Bishop behind the line. Ashort drop out did not help Harlequins cause and although Hull did not score immediately a ball steal from Turner proved crucial and Tickle crossed from dummy half.
After losing Temata and Danny Orr to injury, Quins offered little but kept completing sets and kicking. The return of Orr after an hour perked up the visitors attack and his pass, kicked forward on the half volley by Tony Clubb saw the centre awarded a try when he got downward pressure ahead of Tom Briscoe.
Finally Quins were on the board but an individual try from 20 metres by Richard Horne, converted by Fitzgibbon killed any hopes of a comeback although Mark Calderwood had to chase back to deny Jones Bishop following a 70 metre run.
