RL Comment: This will sound xenophobic

The recent impact that a volcano in Iceland has had on every airline and aeroplane in the UK has brought something sharply into focus. Although it is nice to welcome foreign teams to the Challenge Cup, is it in fact the right thing to do when teams like Leigh and Salford, instead of being able to take 2 hour flights are now subjected to 24 hours of arduous travel?

In truth what value do the French teams add to the competition? It's a subject that could be debated over full evenings in pubs and clubs.

My own view is that there should just be the two clubs, Catalans and Toulouse that enter because they are playing in these competitions. If there is to be further foreign teams let's create a seperate competition, althought that said with acts of god you still don't know if teams will be able to travel.

I'd hate to be a member of the Leigh or Salford teams this weekend as they face challenging cup ties versus Limoux and Catalans respectively, they will be shattered!

I know in Leigh's case they didn't set off anywhere until around 7pm last night, then they stayed in Folkestone and continued their journey today.

I personally think it needs a rethink.
