Huddersfield, Castleford and Wigan were the big winners on Friday night as each opened their league account with victory.
At the Galpharm Stadium, the Huddersfield Giants withstood a good opening ten minutes from Bradford Bulls before heading into a 16-0 lead thanks to tries from Leroy Cudjoe (2) and Shaun Lunt while reigning Man of Steel Brett Hodgson kicked a couple of goals.
The Bulls fought back before halftime with wingers Stuart Reardon and Rikki Sheriffe both scoring.
Huddersfield scored the first try in the second half through new import David Fa'alogo and Hodgson converted before adding a penalty. The Bulls dominated the last twenty minutes and but for a memorable defensive effort from the Giants in the mist and gloom may have picked a result up. All their efforts earned was a second try from Reardon awarded by the video referee, meaning marquee signing Matt Orford began his Super League career with a loss.
Over at the DW Stadium, Wigan proved far too strong for the Crusaders, eventually winning 38-6.
Warriors scored tries through Lee Mossop, Andy Coley, Cameron Phelps, Martin Gleeson, Amos Roberts (2) and Pat Richards who also weighed in with 5 goals while the Brian Noble coached visitors scored a first half try through Luke Dyer that was converted by Michael Witt but Wigan built on their 20-6 half-time advantage to win comfortably.
The shock of the evening came at Headingley Carnegie Stadium where Castleford Tigers enjoyed a big second half to beat Leeds in the mist before a 15,800 gate.
Tries for the Rhinos by Brett Delaney and Danny McGuire, one of which was converted by Kevin Sinfield suggested that it was business as usual for the Super League champs who opened their season last week with a 34-6 disposal of the Crusaders in Wrexham.
James Evans replied to McGuire for the Tigers before their impressive form came to the fore. Tries from Joe Westerman, Brent Sherwin and Dean Widders put the Tigers firmly in the driving seat with Craig Huby (1) and Westerman (3) kicking goals.
