Born 19th January 1931, died 1st August 2009.
So reads the obituary of one of the most generous and gentle people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing in the media.
Keith Macklin in my eyes in unsurpassed. Always friendly, always a good word and ever professional. As someone who spent 50 years in broadcasting and penned a couple of books, he was damned good at his job but it also shows that to make your way in the media industry you don't have to be two faced or have a spare supply of daggers to plunge into peoples backs when they are down.
As a commentator, particulary up until a few years ago, few could match his silky voice and wonderful tones that described a multitude of sports from Rugby League to Football and Cricket.
A couple of times in later years I'd heard about him being savaged a little gathering post games comments - completely disrespectfully I may add, but the mark of the man was the fact that no matter what had happened he'd always end by saying "and thank you very much."
How Keith progressed his career gives hope to someone like myself. I am saddened by his death and if ever a member of his family drops by this, I want them to know that he will be missed and the gentleman with the mic will never be forgotten.
