A new amateur season

A new amateur season is upon us and plenty of teams up and down the country will be dreaming of glory, be it promotion, cup or grand final. Of course very few will see these dreams fulfilled and like we've seen over the summer at Leigh perhaps a team that is not tipped to struggle will end at the wrong side of the table.

In my opinion the Fraser Eagle National Conference just seems to get better year after year and Leigh East for example are aiming for the top.

In addition to the bulk of last years squad still being available, which in turn should mean another excellent term in prospect for the likes of BARLA GB fullback Ryan Fieldhouse and Mr Leigh East himself, Danny Kilshaw, East appear to have strengthened considerably. Coming back to the red and black side of amateur rugby in Leigh are the likes of John Taylor and Scott O'Brien while the club have also snapped up John Woods who carried on his free scoring ways across the bridge at Twist Lane.

I'm sure everyone that follows East will be pleased about these signings while the addition of Gary Middlehurst from Halton Simms Cross could prove a very shrewd addition to the squad.

Last season proved an interesting one with Premier Division status only being secured late on in a competitive league, especially after East made the play-offs the previous year. It just goes to show that nothing is certain in sport. I remember a few years ago when East got relegated and I thought they had a good squad.

May I wish everyone the very best for the new season and I think we'll have some interesting times ahead.
